These cable cars are the nation's only landmark still in operation. This icon has been lovingly recreated from photos and hand measurements. Every detail has been included, even the engraved windows.

The driving force behind the San Francisco cable car system came truly by accident. On a typical damp summer day in 1869, Mr. Andrew Hallidie witnessed a horse drawn streetcar slipping backwards down a steep slope carrying five horses to their deaths. Being involved in the manufacture of wire rope, Hallidie began working on a cable driven street car and the first line went into service in 1873. More than 125 years later, the cable cars are still in use and are one of San Francisco's most popular tourist attractions.
